King George V began this tradition on 25 December 1932 with his first radio broadcast in a small from Sandringham.

Since then, the Christmas Day message has been delivered by the reigning monarch to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth nearly every year.

King George VI used the Christmas broadcasts to reassure the nation and the Empire during World War II.

Queen Elizabeth II’s first televised Christmas broadcast aired in 1957.
