King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway are making their first State Visit to Australia from 22 to 27 February at the invitation of the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retired).

The King and the Queen were greeted by children presenting flowers and a choir, Kor I Australia, singing Greig’s Spring, when they arrived in Canberra on Sunday evening on 21 February.

The Norwegian King and Queen will be promoting economic and business ties between Australia and Norway, including oil, gas and mining. The Royal Couple will be accompanied by high-level senior government officials and business leaders.

The royal visit also includes meetings with the Governor-General, Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Defence Force personnel in Canberra.

Tony Abbott has said he is looking forward to meeting Their Majesties during their visit and welcomes the growing strength of the ties between the two nations.

King Harald and Queen Sonja will open the Antarctic seminar at the Australian National Maritime Museum, meet Norwegians living in Australia and representatives from the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.

More than 23,000 Australians have Norwegian ancestry.
