The Swedish Royal Family, Prince Daniel’s family assembled in the Royal Chapel for the christening of three-month old Prince Oscar on Friday, 27 May 2016.
Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Princess Madeleine, Hans Astrom and Oscar Magnuson were chosen as godparents.
Archbishop Ante Jackelén, chaplain Bishop Johan Dalman and pastor of the Royal Academy and the Court Parish’s regular chaplain, Michael Bjerkhagen led the service.
The little prince’s older sister Princess Estelle, and their two cousins, Princess Leonore and Prince Nicolas also attended the service.
Prince Nicolas was content to play with a toothbrush as his father, Christopher O’Neill held him during the service.
Prince Oscar wore the Prince Gustav Adolf christening gown, which has been worn by royal babies since 1906. A cape was added, at Princess Margaretha’s baptism in 1935, with all the names and dates of royal Christenings embroidered on its lining.
He was baptised with water from Öland, a tradition which began with Crown Princess Victoria’s baptism, using a silver baptismal fond dating from the late 1600s.
Proud grandfather, King Carl XVI Gustaf, presented Prince Oscar with the insignia of the Order of the Seraphim.
The Crown Princess, Prince Daniel and their children led the procession from the church as Handel’s For unto us a child is born (from The Messiah) was played, before posing for photographs.
A host of dignitaries, including government officials, were also present.
A 21-gun salute was fired from Skeppsholmen after the service.
A reception and a lunch was held for invited guests.
