Prince Charles confessed he was run over by a bus when he was a student at Cambridge University.

According to reports, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were attending official engagements in Cambridge to mark the historic Fitzwilliam Museum’s Bicentenary and to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Cambridge University Library.

He revealed this incident for the first time during a reception on Tuesday, 29 November, at the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Quite how I survived being run over by a bus when I was on a bicycle just outside here I don’t know.

Sources revealed it was something of a close shave.

If he hadn’t survived, the course of British history would have dramatically changed, with Prince Andrew taking his place as the heir to the throne.

Prince Charles studied at Trinity College from 1967 to 1970 — the first-ever heir to the throne to graduate with a degree. He was awarded a 2:2 in history, after changing from archaeology and anthropology after a year.

He also joined Trinity’s drama group, the Dryden Society, in November 1968, and even starred in two annual reviews.

Prince Charles said it was always the greatest pleasure to return to Cambridge. He said he always felt so lucky to study at the university, and it all went by in a flash.

He said he was horrified to realise that it will be fifty years since he first arrived at Cambridge University.

“All I can say is that time goes past “unbelievably quickly … but I enjoyed it enormously.”

His grandfather, King George VI had studied history, economics and civics for one year at Trinity College from 1919. He only stayed for one year, so he left without completing a degree.

The Prince and the Duchess met local schoolchildren taking part in educational activities and heard about the museum’s local outreach, education and development initiatives.

The royal couple also saw rare books from the Cambridge University Library’s collection, including a copy of Charles Darwin’s, “On The Original of Species by Means of Natural Selection.”
