2017 is shaping up to be another big year for royalty and for commemorating historic milestones, especially in Denmark, Britain and Norway.
14 January – Queen Margrethe II celebrates the 45th anniversary of her accession in 1972.
The Queen sends her congratulations as Canada celebrates its 150th Anniversary this year, with various events throughout the year, especially on 1 July (Canada Day).
6 January marks 1,000 years since Canute, or Cnut was crowned King of England in, according to sources, on 6 January 1017 in the Old St Paul’s Cathedral.
Queen Elizabeth celebrates her Sapphire (65th) Anniversary on 6 February of her accession in 1952, when her father George VI passed away. However, the Queen usually spends the day in private contemplation and prayer.
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will celebrate her 70th Birthday on 17 July. So far, no details have been released regarding celebrations.
31 August – The 20th Anniversary of Diana, Princess of Wales’ tragic death in Paris, which is likely to be a low-key event with no fundraising concerts held to honour her memory. However, her sons William and Harry are said to be highlighting her charity work, including HIV and AIDS.
The Queen and Prince Philip will be celebrating their Platinum (70th) Wedding Anniversary 20 November. Further details will be advised when they become available.
King Willem-Alexander will be celebrating his 50th birthday on 27 April 2017 with a nationwide party in the Netherlands. The Dutch celebrate Koningsdag (King’s Day), which is also a public holiday, and everyone wears orange!
The Netherlands will be celebrating Koningsdag with street markets, music, flea markets and funfairs.
King Willem-Alexander and his family will be visiting the municipality of Tilburg this year.
Princess Margriet of the Netherlands and Prof Pieter van Vollenhoven will celebrate their Golden (50th) Wedding Anniversary. They married on 10 January 1967 at the St James Church in The Hague.
King Harald and Queen Sonja have already broken a number of records during their reign and will be celebrating their 80th birthdays.
The Norwegian government will host a joint celebration, including a gala dinner, for King Harald and Queen Sonja on 10 May 2017, but there will be several public and private celebrations throughout the year.
The King’s sister, Princess Astrid celebrates her 85th Birthday on 12 February. However, no details regarding any celebrations have been released.
King Harald will be away on his actual birthday, 21 February, as he will attend the Norwegian Ski Championships in Lynga, and he will probably celebrate this milestone in private.
Meanwhile, Queen Sonja will spend part of her birthday on 4 July inaugurating a new project in Dronningparken, where part of the stables which was originally built to house Queen Maud’s horses, will be reopened to the public as the Queen Sonja Art Hall for arts and culture.
The royal family will again attend the Holmenkollen Ski festival in March.
King Harald and Queen Sonja, with Crown Prince Haakon, will visit various municipalities in Hedmark and Upland in Norway’s hinterland.
Commemorations will be held to mark the centenary of the first-ever Sami national congress which met in Trondheim on 6 February 1917.
King Harald and Queen Sonja will also be making a state visit to Finland to celebrate their Centenary on 1 June.
Crown Princess Victoria will be celebrating her 40th birthday on 14 July (Victoria Day).
