A Council of State was held at the Royal Palace on Monday, 4 September 2017, following the birth of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia’s child last week.

King Carl XVI Gustaf announced the little Prince will be named Gabriel Carl Walther, with the given name Gabriel and granted the Dukedom of Dalarna.

Princess Sofia gave birth to Prince Gabriel on Thursday, 31 August, at 11.24 am at Danderyd Hospital in Stockholm.

Prince Carl Philip was present during the birth and later addressed the waiting media with the baby’s weight and length.

The baby weighed in at 3.400 kg (about 7 lb 7 oz) and 49 cm (just over 19 inches) in length.

A 21-gun salute was fired at 6.00 pm at Skeppsholmen, Boden, Härnösand, Karlskrona and Gothenburg, to mark the occasion.

Proud grandparents King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia visited the hospital the following day, followed by Princess Sofia’s parents, Erik and Marie Hellqvist and sisters Lina and Sara, before she and Prince Gabriel were discharged.

They are now home at Villa Solbacken.

The royal couple has a son, Prince Alexander, Duke of Södermanland, who was born on 19 April 2016.
