Clarence House issued a media release on 27 November 2017 saying the Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to American actress Meghan Markle.

According to the statement, Prince Harry had informed his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and other close members of the Royal Family as well as seeking and receiving the blessing from Meghan’s parents.

Prince Harry and Ms Markle had become engaged earlier this month and the couple will live at Nottingham Cottage.

Their wedding is scheduled to be held during Spring 2018. More details will be announced in due course.

Meghan is best known for her role as Rachel Zane in the hit TV series, Suits. She did not sign on for another season, sparking speculation that a royal engagement would be announced very soon.

They first met in Toronto in July 2016 when introduced by a mutual friend. However, their relationship didn’t go public until October when Prince Harry delivered a stinging rebuke towards the media and social media trolls intruding into Meghan’s private life.

However, the new royal bride won’t be styled ‘Princess Meghan’ but HRH Princess Henry of Wales, seeing she wasn’t born into royalty.

Duke of Sussex?

According to sources, the Queen is likely to bestow the title, Duke of Sussex, on Prince Harry on his wedding day.

Meghan will also become HRH The Duchess of Sussex, should Prince Harry accept the title.

The last Duke of Sussex was George III’s sixth son, the twice-married Prince Augustus Frederick, who died in 1843.

However, both his marriages were deemed illegal, in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act 1772, as Prince Augustus Frederik did not seek permission from his father.

His two children by his first wife, Lady Augusta Murray were deemed illegitimate.

However, the Duke of Sussex was Queen Victoria’s favourite uncle and he was given the honour of giving her away at her wedding to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1840.
