Buckingham Palace has released a new portrait of Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh on 11 December 2017, painted by Australian-born artist Ralph Heimans.

The portrait which was painted in the year of Prince Philip’s retirement is on display at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark.

The Duke is standing in the Grand Corridor at Windsor Castle wearing the pale blue sash of the Order of the Elephant, which is Denmark’s oldest and most distinguished highest-ranking honour.

Prince Philip was born a Prince of Denmark and his ancestry spans both the British and Danish Royal Families.

His grandfather, George I of Greece, was originally a Danish prince born in Copenhagen.

Prince William, the younger brother of King Frederik VIII, Britain’s Queen Alexandra and Dagmar (Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia), was elected as the new King, after the Greek National Assembly deposed its former King, Otto, in 1863.

The Greeks had originally favoured Prince Alfred but the British Government declined the invitation on his behalf, especially as his mother Queen Victoria was vehemently opposed to the idea.

Prince William was chosen among several other candidates including Queen Victoria’s brother-in-law Ernest II Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, her nephew Ernst Leopold, 4th Prince of Leiningen, Henri of Orléans, Duke of Aumale and Archduke Maximilian of Austria.

Prince Philip’s great-grandfather, Christian IX, was King of Denmark from 1863 to 1906, and was known as the ‘Father-in-Law of Europe’.

Windsor Castle also holds a special significance regarding Prince Philip’s ancestry.

His mother, Princess Alice, and his maternal grandmother, Princess Victoria, were born in the Tapestry Room at the end of the Grand Corridor.

Portraits of Princess Alice and Princess Victoria hang on the right side of the Grand Corridor, alongside one of Queen Victoria.

The Duke of Edinburgh had retired from official duties in August 2017, after attending a parade with the Royal Marines at Buckingham Palace
