The Queen shares her memories with royal commentator Alastair Bruce during this one-hour film, The Coronation, as apart of the Royal Collection Season across BBC television and radio in the United Kingdom.

The Queen says, ‘I’ve seen one Coronation, and been the recipient in the other, which is pretty remarkable’.

The Queen set out from Buckingham Palace on 2 June 1953, one of the coldest June days of the century, to be crowned at Westminster Abbey, after 16 months of careful planning.

Millions of people around the world watched the Coronation on television, a ceremony dating back more than one thousand years.

The Crown Jewels, which are part of the Royal Collection, consists of 140 sacred objects and contain 23,000 precious stones, forming the most complete collection of royal regalia in the world.

They are symbols of the relationship between the Sovereign and the people, as well as duties and responsibilities of leadership.

The film also includes the extraordinary story of St Edward’s Crown, which was destroyed during he English Civil War, and remade for Charles II’s Coronation on 23 April 1661.

The Queen has worn the St Edward Crown once, at the moment she was crowned in Westminster Abbey.

She tells Alastair Bruce why ‘you can’t look down whilst wearing it’.

BBC Director of Content Charlotte Moore said, ‘In her own words The Queen will bring to life the enduring symbolic importance of the Coronation ceremonies for modern audiences to enjoy.’

The Coronation will air on ABC and ABC HD on Sunday, 4 February 2018, at 7.40 pm for Australian viewers.
