The little prince was born at 11.01 am (local time) and weighed in at 8 lbs 7oz (3.8272 kg).

The baby, who is Queen Elizabeth II’s sixth great-grandchild, will be styled HRH Prince [name] of Cambridge.

The official announcement from Kensington Palace.

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.

The Town Crier has appeared on the steps of the Lindo Wing announcing the birth of HRH Prince of Cambridge shortly afterwards.

A formal notice of the birth was posted in Buckingham Palace’s forecourt later that day and will remain in place for 24 hours.

The new baby shares his birthday with distant cousin Lady Gabriella Windsor, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent’s daughter Lady Gabriella Windsor who was also born in the Lindo Wing in 1981.

Malcolm IV of Scotland (b 1141) and Alfonso of Portugal (b 1185) were also born on St George’s Day.

Possible names include Albert, Arthur, Frederick, Henry, James, Alexander, Philip, William (after his father), Alfred, Charles, Edward and David.

However, Princess Charlotte has made history as she will not lose her position in the line of succession, despite having a younger brother, due to changes made at the Commonwealth Government Heads of State (CHOGM) at Perth in 2011.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry has been bumped down to sixth place.

Governor-General of Australia Sir Peter Cosgrove has posted a congratulatory message on Facebook.
