Mesdames et Messieurs,

Noël et les fêtes de fin d’année sont un moment de joie et de retrouvailles pour beaucoup d’entre nous. La Reine et moi sommes ravis pour ceux qui vivent cette période de vrai bonheur, de partage avec leurs proches. Mais nos pensées vont aussi à tous ceux dont la souffrance ou la solitude est d’autant plus ressentie pendant ces vacances. Et nous remercions ceux qui donnent de leur temps et de leur cœur pour les soutenir et les encourager.

Nous vivons à une époque charnière. Remettre en question notre modèle social, économique et environnemental. Une époque où beaucoup ont perdu leurs repères. Et qui nécessite donc une plus grande implication de notre part. Ce n’est pas le moment du renoncement.

Les défis auxquels nous sommes confrontés, pour nos sociétés, pour notre planète, nous les connaissons. Nous déclarons même son urgence. Dans une très large mesure, nous connaissons également les solutions. Alors, comment les traduire en actions concrètes?

Tout est une question d’attitude.

Pour changer les choses, il faut d’abord être convaincu et agir en conséquence. Nous sommes responsables de nos actions. Soyons plus conscients que notre comportement individuel a des implications pour les autres. Ne cédons pas au court-termisme. Concentrons-nous sur le long terme. En investissant dans des solutions dont nous ne verrons pas forcément les résultats par nous-mêmes. Mais qui profitera aux générations qui nous suivront?

C’est aussi voir et entendre. Nous ne pouvons rester indifférents à l’injustice, à la pauvreté, à l’exclusion. La violence aussi, trop présente autour de nous: cachée dans les maisons, sournoise dans l’abus d’alcool et de drogue, surtout chez les jeunes, insidieuse dans les ragots et les soupçons, explicite dans le langage qui juge et le geste qui détruit.

Soyons conscients de notre force collective. C’est le mouvement de ceux qui ne sont pas résignés. C’est aussi la force tranquille, l’action discrète et puissante de tant de nos concitoyens engagés pour une société plus humaine.

Enfin, pour canaliser les énergies et la créativité, nous avons besoin d’un état d’esprit constructif qui nous permette de nous rassembler autour de projets communs.

Aujourd’hui, il est essentiel que nous mettions en place le plus tôt possible un gouvernement fédéral à part entière, capable de prendre des décisions équilibrées et de les associer fermement. C’est sur cela que nous comptons tous, sans plus tarder.

Mesdames et Messieurs,

Nous aurons l’avenir auquel nous croyons.

Pour ses dix-huit ans, notre fille Elisabeth était entourée de jeunes de sa génération. Ils ont exprimé leur foi en l’avenir. Nous avons vu une jeunesse lucide prête à s’engager.

Avec eux, je crois en l’énorme potentiel de notre pays, en notre capacité collective à relever les défis. A condition que nous unissions nos forces et recherchons l’unité dans la diversité dans le respect des sensibilités de chacun

Dames en heren,

Kerstmis en de eindejaarsfeesten zijn voor de meesten van ons een tijd van vreugde. Een tijd van warm weerzien. De Koningin en ik zijn blij voor al wie die momenten van waar geluk met hun naasten kunnen delen. Maar we denken ook aan de mensen voor wie het leed of de eenzaamheid tijdens de feestdagen nog zwaarder wegen. En we zijn dankbaar voor wie zich met hart en ziel inzet om ze te steunen en moed te geven.

We beleven een scharnierperiode. Ons sociaaleconomisch model en onze benadering van het milieu worden in vraag gesteld. Velen van ons raken zo hun houvast kwijt. Daarom mogen we niet aan de kant blijven staan, minder dan ooit. Dit is niet de tijd om op te geven.

We kennen ze zeer goed, de uitdagingen waarvoor we staan: voor onze samenleving, voor de planeet. We blijven zeggen dat ze dringend moeten worden aangepakt. En grotendeels weten we ook wat de oplossingen zijn. De vraag is, hoe we die in concrete actie kunnen omzetten.

Alles is een kwestie van attitude.

Om zaken te kunnen veranderen, moet je er eerst in geloven en ernaar handelen. We zijn allemaal verantwoordelijk voor onze daden. Ons gedrag heeft ook gevolgen voor de anderen. We moeten dat beter beseffen. Laten we niet toegeven aan het kortetermijnhandelen. En voor de lange termijn gaan. Voor oplossingen, waarvan we misschien niet zelf de vruchten zullen kunnen plukken – maar die de volgende generaties ten goede zullen komen.

Je moet ook willen zien en horen. We kunnen niet onverschillig blijven tegenover onrecht, armoede, uitsluiting. Of tegenover het geweld dat ons in vele gedaanten omringt: verborgen binnen het gezin, sluipend in het misbruik van alcohol en drugs, vooral bij jongeren, vals in roddels en kwaadsprekerij, maar ook duidelijk zichtbaar in woorden die veroordelen of in een vernietigend gebaar.

Laten we ons ook bewust zijn van onze collectieve sterkte. De kracht van allen die niet berusten in de zaken zoals ze zijn. En ook die stille kracht die schuilt in het discrete maar doeltreffend handelen van al onze medeburgers die zich inzetten voor een meer menselijke samenleving.

Tot slot – om te kunnen bouwen op al die energie en creativiteit die in het land leeft, hebben we nood aan een constructieve ingesteldheid, die ons verenigt rond gemeenschappelijke projecten.

Het is wel van wezenlijk belang dat zo snel mogelijk een volwaardige federale regering wordt gevormd, die evenwichtige beslissingen kan nemen, die eensgezind en standvastig worden gedragen. Dat is wat wij nu allemaal verwachten.

Dames en heren,

Uiteindelijk krijgen we de toekomst waarin we zelf geloven.

Voor haar achttiende verjaardag heeft onze dochter Elisabeth samen met haar leeftijdsgenoten hun geloof in de toekomst uitgesproken. We hebben toen scherpzinnige jongeren gehoord, die zich ten volle willen inzetten.

Met hen geloof ik in het enorme potentieel van ons land, in ons gezamenlijk vermogen om de voor ons liggende uitdagingen aan te gaan. Op voorwaarde dat we onze krachten bundelen en eenheid in verscheidenheid brengen, met respect voor de overtuiging van eenieder.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Christmas and the holiday season are a time of joy and reunion for many of us. The Queen and I are delighted for those who live this time of true happiness, of sharing with their loved ones. But our thoughts also go out to all those whose suffering or loneliness is all the more felt during these holidays. And we thank those who give their time and their hearts to support and encourage them.

We live in a pivotal time. Questioning our social, economic, environmental model. A time when many have lost their bearings. And which therefore requires greater involvement from us. It is not the time for renunciation.

The challenges we face, for our societies, for our planet, we know them. We even declare its urgency. To a very large extent, we also know the solutions. So how do we translate them into concrete actions?

Everything is a question of attitude.

To change things, you must first be convinced, and act accordingly. We are responsible for our actions. Let us be more aware that our individual behaviour has implications for others. Let’s not give in to short-termism. Let’s focus on the long term. By investing in solutions, the results of which we will not necessarily see for ourselves. But which will benefit the generations that follow us?

It is also about seeing and hearing. We cannot remain indifferent to injustice, poverty, exclusion. Violence too, too present around us: hidden in homes, sneaky in alcohol and drug abuse, especially among young people, insidious in gossip and suspicion, explicit in the language that judges and the gesture that destroys.

Let us be aware of our collective strength. It is the movement of those who are not resigned. It is also the quiet force, the discreet and powerful action of so many of our fellow citizens who are committed to a more human society.

Finally, to channel energies and creativity, we need a constructive mindset that allows us to gather around common projects.

Today, it is essential that we put in place as soon as possible a full-fledged federal government, capable of making balanced decisions and of carrying them together firmly. This is what we are all counting on, without further ado.

Ladies and gentlemen,

We will have the future in which we believe.

For her eighteenth birthday, our daughter Elisabeth was surrounded by young people of her generation. They expressed their faith in the future. We saw a lucid youth ready to commit.

With them, I believe in the enormous potential of our country, in our collective capacity to meet the challenges. On condition that we join forces and seek unity in diversity while respecting everyone’s sensibilities.
