King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima have accepted an invitation from President Joko Widodo to pay a three-day state visit to Indonesia.

The visit will take place from Tuesday, 10 March, to Friday, 13 March, to the cities of Jakarta and Yogyakarta in Java and the islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra.

Foreign Minister Stephanus Abraham ‘Stef’ Blok will accompany the King and the Queen.

This state visit acknowledges the broad and close relationship between the two nations, including a shared past between Indonesians and Dutch people for centuries.

The main focus will be on the economy, nature conservation, culture and science.

Tuesday, 10 March − Jakarta

The state visit starts in Jakarta with wreath-laying in the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery, in memory of the victims of wars, especially those during the Indonesian war of independence from 1945 to 1949.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima arrive at the Presidential Palace in Bogor for the official welcome ceremony as President Joko Widodo and his wife Iriana Widodo receive the Royal Couple, followed by a state lunch.

In the afternoon, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visit the Dutch War Cemetery of Menteng Pulolay to lay a wreath to remember those Dutchmen who died during World War II and the Indonesian war of independence.

Afterwards, the Royal Couple visits the Pipiltin Cocoa chocolate factory who works with Indonesian farmers to produce cocoa in a sustainable way and to improve product quality.

The King and the Queen meet participants of the economic mission and witness the signing of various cooperation agreements between Indonesian and Dutch companies.

The Royal Couple will visit Erasmus Huis which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020 and will see the ‘Innovation’ photo exhibition, part of a competition for young Indonesian photographers.

The day ends with a reception for the Dutch community.

Wednesday, 11 March − Yogyakarta

The Royal Couple will participate in a discussion about opportunities and challenges for Dutch business in Indonesia, before leaving for Yogyakarta.

The Sultan of Yogyakarta, Hamengkubuwono X,  will receive King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at his palace, the Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, and host lunch.

After lunch at the palace, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will visit the ‘Connected Kampoeng’, a neighbourhood where residents have been able to improve their living conditions together thanks to the arrival of the Internet.

The Royal Couple will join in discussions with students from the Innovative Academy at The Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) who focuses on scientific cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands.

The Innovative Academy encourages creative collaboration with creating digital startups.

Later that evening, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visit the temple complex of Prambanan—the largest Hindu-Javanese temple complex in Indonesia.

The Royal Couple will speak with various religious leaders about promoting religious tolerance in the region and Indonesia.

Afterwards, they will be given a tour of the temple complex, attend part of a traditional Ramayana performance and another by modern music group, Rubah di Selatan.

Thursday, 12 March − Kalimantan

The Royal Couple spend their third and final day of their state visit in Kalimantan, visiting a research centre in Sebangau National Park and a tour of water management and reforestation projects.

The King and the Queen will also speak with former lumberjacks who are now involved in sustainable management of the park.

In the afternoon, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visit the Nyaru Menting Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre which looks after more than 316 young orangutans who were expelled from their homes area or lost their parents. The orangutans also receive lessons to learn how to survive in the wild at the so-called ‘Forest School’.

The Royal Couple will talk to farmers in a Dayak model farm about making  palm oil more sustainable, followed by meeting business community representatives.

The day finishes with a visit to the Pledge United program’s football training where Indoensian boys learn to speak out against violence against girls and women.

Friday, 13 March − Sumatra

On the last day of the state visit, the Royal Couple travels to Lake Toba to visit a traditional Batak village to learn more about the history of the area and future developments, including ecotourism and water quality.

President Widodo designed Lake Toba as a new location for sustainable tourism.

The DEL Institute for Technology will give a talk to the King and the Queen about the development of sustainable tourism.

The institute is committed to improving the water quality of Lake Toba whilst combating overfishing and discharging waste water.

Then King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima sail by boat to the island of Samosir in the middle of Lake Toba to visit the Silima Lombu Eco Village, set up to show the local community the possibilities of sustainable tourism and small-scale organic farming.

The Royal Couple leave Indonesia later that evening for their flight home to the Netherlands.
