Queen Margrethe, the Crown Prince Couple and Princess Benedikte attended the opening of the Danish Parliament at Christianborg Palace on Tuesday, 6 October 2020.
At the stroke at 12.00 noon, a new parliamentary year began for the Folketing in the Folketing Hall at Christiansborg Palace.
Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary and Princess Benedikte, following tradition, attend the Folketing’s first session.
According to the Constitution, the Folketing must open on the first Tuesday in October.
The first item on the agenda is always to elect a chairman and deputy chairmen of the Folketing.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen gave her opening speech during the proceedings.
The Folketing is a unicameral (one house) parliament (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands), consisting of 179 Members of Parliament who belong to 12 different political parties: 175 are elected in Denmark, 2 are elected in the Faroe Islands and 2 in Greenland.
Elections are held every four years.
