The Duchess of Cornwall appears as a Fairy Godmother in a cartoon to help launch this year’s 500 Words short story writing competition.

The competition was launched on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 on Monday, 16 January 2017.

As an Honorary Judge, the Duchess will help choose competition winners.

500 Words is open to children, aged between 5 and 13, who live in the UK, and closes at 7.00 pm (local time) on Thursday, 23 February 2017.

Entrants write an original story on any theme or subject in 500 words or less.

Broadcaster Chris Evans started 500 Words seven years ago as he had a dream to get children excited about reading and writing, no matter what their ability.

Celebrities will read the winning entries during the Chris Evans Breakfast Show broadcasted live from the Tower of London.

Past celebrity readers have included Julie Walters, Tom Hiddleston, Sir Kenneth Brannagh or Jeremy Irons.

500 Words is now the most successful story-writing competitions for kids in Britain, as half a million schoolchildren have submitted entries in the past.

The Duchess made her debut in last year’s animation promoting the writing competition.
