Royalty from all over Europe, family friends and Norwegian officials celebrated King Harald V and Queen Sonja’s joint birthday celebrations at the Royal Palace in Oslo on Tuesday, 9 May.

Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary had arrived aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog in Oslo.

Sophie Countess of Wessex represented Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.

Celebrations kicked off in the Palace Square on Tuesday afternoon as crowds gathered in the Palace Square to enjoy entertainment including the King’s Guard, Oslo Soul Children and a performance by acrobats from the contemporary circus, Bjerke.

The crowds cheered, as some waved flags, as King Harald and Queen Sonja, with the members of the Royal Family, and their guests appeared on the balcony.

Actor Bjarne Hjelmeland gave a speech before the crowd sang Happy Birthday.

Gala Dinner at the Royal Palace

According to NRK the dinner was cooked with produce from Norway. as the King and the Queen are keen to support local industries.

Inside every old person is a young person wondering what happened.

King Harald gave a welcome speech.

Then Queen Sonja gave her speech addressing family and friends.

Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise gave a speech during the dinner, focusing on childhood memories including Queen Sonja employing an Austrian chef to teach them how to make apple strudel.

Lunch Aboard Norge

Royal guests including Sophie Countess of Wessex joined King Harald and Queen Sonja for a short cruise and lunch aboard the Royal Yacht Norge despite the wet weather.
