Prince Carl Philip’s Life So Far …

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s second child and only son Prince Carl Philip Edmund Bertil, Duke of Värmland, was born on 13 May 1979 at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

He was christened on 31 August 1979, with Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Princess Birgitta and Prince Leopold of Bayern appointed as his godparents.

At the time of his birth, Prince Carl Philip was the heir apparent to the Swedish throne until 1 January 1980 when a new law came into effect, which made natural birth order the basis of succession, instead of agnatic premature.

His eldest sister Crown Princess Victoria became the heir, with Prince Carl Philip bumped down to second place at the time.

Today he is now fourth in line, following Crown Princess Victoria and her two children, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar.

Prince Carl was educated in Sweden and the United States, during his school years, including a science programme at Lundsberg upper secondary school.

He has struggled with dyslexia during his life, like his father King Carl Gustaf and his older sister Victoria.

Further studies included graphic design in Stockholm and the Rhode Island School of Design from 2006 and 2007, and Agricultural and Rural Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp. He graduated with a diploma in January 2012.

Prince Carl Philip also completed his military service in the Amphibious Battalion at Vaxholm Coastal Artillery Regiment in 2000, before completing a Naval Officer training course.

He married former model Sofia Hellqvist on 13 June 2015 in the Royal Palace of Stockholm’s Royal Chapel.
