Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, King Harald V of Norway and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden are among world leaders and heads of state sending messages to the  President of Tanzania, Dr John Pombe Joseph Magufuli.

Over 200 people lost their lives when the ferry MV Nyerere capsized on Lake Victoria on Thursday, 20 September 2018, a few metres from the jetty at Ukerewe, the lake’s biggest island.

A government investigation is currently underway to discover the cause of the accident and who was responsible.

Queen Elizabeth sent the following message has been sent to the President of Tanzania on 26 September 2018.

‘Prince Philip and I were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic accident on Lake Victoria. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the victims and the missing. On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom please accept my heartfelt condolences.’
