The Swedish Armed Forces will fire 21-gun salutes from Skeppsholmen in Stockholm on Thursday, 23 December 23, to mark Queen Silvia’s 78th Birthday.

More 21-gun salutes will be fired from Boden, Härnösand, Karlskrona and Gothenburg.

Her Majesty was born Silvia Renate in Heidelberg, Germany on 23 December 1943 – the only daughter of Walther Sommerlath and his Brazilian wife Alice (née Soares de Toledo).

Silvia Sommerlath met Crown Prince Carl Gustaf whilst working as hostess trainer with the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and Deputy Head of Protocol of the Organising Committee for the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria until 1973.

The Royal Court of Sweden announced King Carl XVI Gustaf’s engagement to Silvia Somerlath on 12 March 1976 and married three months later on 19 June in Stockholm Cathedral.

They have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine, and eight grandchildren.
