Australia Post has released two new stamps on Monday, 4 April 2022, to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne.
The two stamps show portraits of Queen Elizabeth from 1952 to 2019 to emphasise the longevity of her reign, with the designs focusing on the platinum colour and the Queen’s cypher, including a rendition of St Edward’s Crown.
Sonia Young from the Australia Post Design Studio designed the stamps and collectables.
The $1.10 Queen Elizabeth Stamp, 1952
The domestic-rate stamp features a photograph taken by the first woman to be appointed as the official royal photographer, Dorothy Wilding, on 15 April 1952.
Portraits from this photograph helped create Queen Elizabeth’s likeness on coins, banknotes and stamps, including in Australia.
This portrait is part of a collection in London’s National Portrait Gallery.
The $3.50 Queen Elizabeth Stamp, 2019
The international-rate stamp, taken by Max Mumby of Indigo/Getty Images, features Queen Elizabeth attending an event to mark British Airway’s centenary in 2019.
A Long-Standing Tradition
Australia Post Group Philatelic Manager Michael Zsolt said the new royal stamps were an incredibly important element of their stamp programme and formed part of a long-standing tradition.
‘Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is the most featured person on Australian stamps, and we were the first postal authority in the Commonwealth to produce a stamp for the Queen’s Birthday each year,’ Mr Zsolt said.
‘We’re delighted to be celebrating another of Her Majesty’s important milestones with these new stamps, which I am sure will be a welcome sight on any letter and an exciting addition to collections across the world.’
Australia Post has previously released stamps to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s Golden and Diamond Jubilees, as well as her birthday every year.
