The ledger stone of Queen Elizabeth’s final resting place is revealed in a photo released on Saturday, 24 September 2022.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh were buried together in a private ceremony on Monday, 19 September in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, following the Commital Service.
The new ledger now has ‘ELIZABETH II 1926-2022’ and ‘PHILIP 1921-2021’ includes an additional metal star of the Order of the Garter above their names, replacing the old one with ‘GEORGE VI 1895-1952′ and ELIZABETH 1900-2002’.
The Queen commissioned the King George VI Memorial Chapel in 1962 as a burial place for her father, King George VI, who died unexpectedly in 1952.
His remains were transferred to the royal vault beneath St George’s Chapel following his funeral on 15 February 1952 until the new chapel, with additional space for his wife, was completed in 1969.
Princess Margaret’s ashes are also buried in the same chapel.
St George’s Chapel is open to visitors on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday every week. Visit Windsor Castle Admissions for more details.
