Crown Princess Victoria gave birth to a son on Wednesday, 2 March 2016, at 8.28 pm, at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm.

King Carl XVI announced his grandson will be known as HRH Prince Oscar Carl Olof, Duke of Skåne, after a special Cabinet meeting was held at the Royal Palace earlier today.

Gun salutes were fired in five cities across Sweden to mark the royal birth.

The little prince was 52 cm (22 inches) in length and weighed in at 3.655 kg (8 pounds).

Prince Daniel was present at the hospital throughout the birth, before sharing the good news with the media, after this happy event, and said he had cut the baby’s umbilical cord.

Princess Estelle, who celebrated her fourth birthday recently, visited the hospital to see her little brother, and is said to be “really enthusiastic and happy about being a big sister.”

The Swedish Royal Court said the family have now left the hospital and have gone home to Haga Palace.

A Te Deum Thanksgiving service will be held in the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace of Stockholm at 12.15 pm (local time).

The Royal Family, other close relatives, members of the Riksdag, other officials, and staff will be among the guests.

The little prince is now 3rd in the Swedish line of accession, following his mother and sister.

Gustav VI Adolf last held the title of Duke of Skåne.
