The heir to the Norwegian throne was born in 1973 in The National Hospital (Rikshospitalet) in Oslo – the only son and younger child of King Harald V and Queen Sonja.

He was named in honour of his paternal great-grandfather, King Haakon VII, and a maternal uncle, Haakon Haraldsen.

The Crown Prince has acted as Regent whenever King Harald has been on sick leave or making state visits abroad.

On 17 January 2021, Crown Prince Haakon marked 30 years as the heir apparent when King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated 30 years on the throne.

Crown Prince Haakon graduated from the Norwegian Naval Academy in Bergen in 1995 and served in the Navy for a year.

He is an Admiral in the Navy and a General in both the Army and the Air Force.

He has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999 and a Master’s degree in development studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2003, specialising in international trade and Africa.

The Crown Prince was a trainee with Norway’s delegation to the United Nations in 2000 and, a year later, completed the Foreign Ministry’s introductory course for civil servants.

Marriage and Family

On 25 August 2001, Crown Prince Haakon married Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby at Oslo Cathedral, with Crown Prince Frederik as the best man.

They have two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra who celebrated her 18th Birthday on 21 January, and Prince Sverre Magnus born in 2005.

Crown Prince Haakon is also the step-father of Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Høiby.

The Crown Prince Family currently live at Skaugum, about 19 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of Oslo.
